Ways to Help
Alabama’s lawyers have a long, honorable history of helping their state, communities, and profession by working to help all of Alabama’s citizens have access to justice.
The main organizations to help lawyers help others are the Volunteer Lawyer Programs (VLPs). Just as the name suggests, these programs match cases with volunteer lawyers throughout Alabama. All of the VLP clients live at or below 125% of the federal poverty level. To qualify for service, clients must reside in Alabama or their legal problem must have arisen in Alabama.
Alabama has five VLPs that serve specific areas of the state. Each VLP accepts different types of cases. View the types of cases the VLP in your area accepts here.
Alabama Legal Answers is a website where volunteer lawyers answer legal questions for free for Alabamians who qualify. All questions and answers are on a private messaging system between the client and the volunteer attorney.
Alabama State Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program provides assistance to clients who live in or whose legal problem is in any Alabama county not covered by another VLP (a county except Baldwin, Clark, Madison, Mobile, or Washington).
Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham provides assistance to clients who live in Birmingham or whose legal problem is in the Birmingham metropolitan area.
Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program provides assistance to clients who live in Madison County or whose legal problem is in Madison County.
Montgomery County Volunteer Lawyers Program provides assistance to clients who live in Montgomery County or whose legal problem is in Montgomery County. To volunteer with Montgomery County VLP email executivedirector@montgomeryvlp.org or call 334-265-0222.
South Alabama Volunteer Lawyers Program provides assistance to clients who live in Mobile, Baldwin, Washington or Clarke Counties or whose legal problems are in one of those counties
